Story Behind the Song
This is a remix/master of the version on my previous web page. I re-did the lead vocal, too.
I made this up before I was married or had children, but it still rings true today.
Lyrics
Grown-Up
by Ben C. Scales, Jr.
Last Saturday night,
I got all dressed up.
My best friend was
Getting hitched.
But two or three drinks
Into the reception,
My tux started to itch.
So a bridesmaid, me,
And a bottle of wine
Went looking for someplace cool.
I said, To Hell
With this rented tux,
And dove straight into the pool.
[Chorus]
People keep telling me
To act my age.
They tell me I'm immature.
They ask me what I want be
When I grow up,
But hey, I'm not really sure.
I'm living my life
Like a teenage boy
In blind pursuit of fun.
I'm not really a grown-up,
No, I just look like one.
Last Tuesday night,
I was sitting at home
Trying to forget the day,
When all of a sudden
The phone was ringing;
An old buddy
Who wanted to play.
Money was not
My friend that night,
And neither was the law.
And as I sat in the tank,
I was telling myself,
I should've listened to my ma,
Who said ...
[Repeat Chorus]
[Bridge]
It's even worse now
I've got children of my own.
Now they too are waiting up
For me when I get home.
When I turned eighteen
I could grow a beard,
And I started losing my hair.
My mother says I look dignified,
My daddy thinks Im not all there.
Well, I can buy cigarettes,
And I can beer,
And I can even drive a truck.
I can sit up all night
Watching infomercials,
And call in sick to work.
[Repeat Chorus]
