Song about a lost love. |

Story Behind the Song
I think it’s obvious what this song is about. The greater tragedy is what happened after I finished recording it.
The song was written in the fall of 1988 for a girlfriend of mine. Her attempts to end the relationship gave birth to this powerful ballad. The message worked, but the song would suffer an unfortunate fate. It was the night that we were driving home from the studio after the final mix of the tune in the summer of 1989. My manager at the time dropped me off at home and left. 10 minutes later he called me with some bad news. He’d just heard a new song on the radio by Cher and Peter Cetera called “After All”…Same title as my song! It was released that very day and it was debuting on the radio. They even used the phrase “After All” the same way I did; at the end of the chorus! Other than that, the songs sound very different. My manager knew that I hadn’t stolen the concept because he knew that my song had been around for nearly a year before theirs came out. We still managed to get some airplay but the conflict was not healthy for my song’s success, with me being an unknown artist. I felt like my song had been squashed like a bug.
One more thing: I was standing in the bank line up one day and my song (After All) came on the bank’s radio. It was the first time I had ever heard it on the radio. Can you imagine? I was standing in line, bursting with the urge to tell everyone that that was me on the radio! I had to inform the bank teller, but I’m sure she thought I was spun. I just told her, “You see my name here on this check I’m depositing? Listen to the announcer at the end of this song. That’s the name you’re gonna hear him say.” And I left the bank. I would have loved to see her face when they announced the song!
