Story Behind the Song
The little jam at the beginning came to Rupe and Eric courtesy of a French woman named Steph. Weve always just called it the Spanish Jam but found out recently that it has a name. Gates is the first complete song that Eric ever wrote. Its been around for awhile.
Lyrics
Before you go to bed, my lad, a tale to you Ill tell
Of his majestys 183rd, the regiment from hell
I signed on with my country in 1664
And if my country asked again, my son, Id offer up my sword
Chorus:
Well Hey! Ho! Away we go! We re off to the front again
You raise your fist and hear the cry of a thousand Highland men
Well Hey! Ho! Away we go! To Aberdeen we tread
Where the blood of a thousand score or more
Make the rivers all run red
They were led be General Kellington, who walked on sacred ground
The devil through and through was he, and for Aberdeen was bound
They sack old Edinburgh, raped in Perth and took Dundee
And, but for the fields on which we stood, would have marched straight to the sea
Chorus
Well, the musketeers lined up at the Gates of Aberdeen
The cannons blazed and the armor charged in numbers since unseen
We fired our pipes in Satan’s face, our family’s plaid hung free
Claymore in hand to free our land, and back to hell ran he
