	Story Behind the Song Psalm 103:12 says that "He has removed our rebellious acts as far away from us as the east is from the west". To me, this is a stunning description of God's compassion and love, which results in a great liberty and freedom for those who will accept it. This piece, "East from West", is a musical portrayal of that sense of personal joy and freedom. Also, the alternating major and minor passages are intended to express some of the dichotomy found in the terms "East" and "West", which are opposites. This song, along with all of the songs on REST, were written rather quickly; the whole album's basic material was composed in about two weeks. Although the melodies and structures are rather simple, the heart of these pieces comes from the improvisation throughout the performances.
