Story Behind the Song
This song was written in late July 1999, and came to me as many songs do during a bus ride. The term 'Rocket Sled' just popped into my head, and the chorus came first. I liked the idea of a Rocket Sled as a metaphor for any catalyst in your life that gets your ass in gear- you know, when you really start to pursue an accomplishment. I recorded it on my desktop PC based studio. The drums/percussion/samples were programmed in FruityLoops Pro, an unbelievable drum machine/sample sequencer that's available on the web. The drum sounds themselves are Tama drum samples I found on the web- I wish I remembered where, 'cuz I'd like to thank those guys! I tried to sequence the drums exactly the way Prairie Prince would have played the parts. This song was my entry in the second year of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. It didn't win squat. The real spice in the song is the 'Mike Nesmith' flavored Fender Jazzmaster rhythm guitar track, graciously provided by my friend Pat Daugherty. Thanks, Pat! [NOTE: song remastered 04/12/01]

Rocket Sled words and music copyright 1999 by Mark James Murphy all rights reserved
I used to be the kind of guy who never knew
in which direction I should end up going
with every destination being just as new
and therefore just as equally worth knowing
I was becoming like a fickle crying kitty cat
Always on the wrong side of a door
It wasnt very long before I got so sick of that
I couldnt take it for a single second more
Thats why
I got myself a Rocket Sled
and now I know which way Im going
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind my seat
that it could power any Boeing
and I dont plan on slowing
It used to be that I was just immobilized
A certified navel lint inspector
But now its not a good idea to look straight down
cause now Im on a supersonic vector
I had a little bit of fear that I cant handle it
What if I should black out from the Gs?
But now the fear is gone, lets get this crazy candle lit
Id rather take this ride than stay down on my knees
Thats why
I got myself a Rocket Sled
and now I have a solid heading
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind my chair
into the future Ill be jetting
and I dont plan on sweating
Ive rigged a camera to film my ride
Some shots so you will not forget me
Big silly goggles to protect my eyes
My cheeks will puff out like Gillespies
-Adios!
(Rocket Sled launch sound effects.) (Solo.)
If youre the kind of person who has fading goals
Then maybe you should start to save some money
And find a way that you can catapult yourself
To your specific land of milk and honey
Because that restlessness you feel should not be trifled with
Its the most important thing youve got
And everybody has a dream to load the rifle with
It wants to take off like a rocket powered shot
You should
Go get yourself a Rocket Sled
And then youll know which way youre going
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind your seat
that it could power any Boeing
and you wont plan on slowing
Go get yourself a Rocket Sled
And then youll have a solid heading
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind your chair
into the future youll be jetting
and you wont plan on sweating
I got myself a Rocket Sled
and now I know which way Im going
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind my seat
that it could power any Boeing
and I dont plan on slowing
I got myself a Rocket Sled
and now I have a solid heading
Straight shot along the track ahead
and so much thrust behind my chair
into the future Ill be jetting
and I dont plan on sweating
