    Story Behind the Song
The music came to me by accident as I was tuning my guitar and accidentally played F# and G at the same time (for those of you who this means nothing to, imagine the nastiest, most dissonant 2 notes you could possibly play together and thats what it was). For some reason I thought it sounded pretty cool and the music came right out. I knew instantly I was going to love the tune. Then I was trying to figure out what to write the lyrics about. I was having some problems with writers block (actually, this was the week I also finished “Marathon”, “Madness”, “Sweat”, and “Smoking Gun.” So I actually wasnt having writers block, but I thought I was). Anyway, sometimes to help when I cant come up with good ideas, I try to think of things like "what would I never write about." I took a look out the window at the gravel driveway and thought to myself that I would never write a song about a rock. Well, as I started thinking about it, I came to realize that writing a song about a rock might be pretty interesting – and kind of humorous in a dry humor kind of way – like even though its about a rock it sounds like its actually about a crotchedy old hermit dude. I had just gotten back from California and decided to write the song from the perspective of this big old rock I saw out there in Orange County in these peoples yard (the houses out there are gorgeous by the way – so is the weather, and the girls, and everything else – see “Madness” for more on this). Its kind of a “Who am I,” though I guess Ive ruined it by telling you. I also only had a few hours until rehearsal and I wanted to take this song in and have the band learn it so I dove in. About an hour later the tune was done. (note: I like to think of the dissonant notes as the horn of the trash truck driving up to these peoples house every Thursday).

    Lyrics
    TRASH

    1. Aint gonna change my ways
    Dont give a damn
Im happy just to sit here who I am
    Ive seen 5000 years
    Aint never loved
    Aint never moved
    Aint never gonna change

Chorus: I like a cold drink of water
    From time to time
Yes Im looking at your daughter
    I cant help it
So are all these friends of mine

    Here comes the trash
    Here comes the trash
    Here comes the trash

    2. I dont care for California
But Ill sit here in my yard
    All day every day
damn kids all they do is play
I cant be swept away Im too big for that
Im ten feet tall and bullet proof
Hard as a rock, just try me

Chorus: I like a cold drink of water
    From time to time
Yes Im looking at your daughter
    I cant help it
So are all these friends of mine

    Here comes the trash
    Thursday
    Take it all away
