Story Behind the Song
Black Sunday Morning explores the way thing were and the way things are. It leaves listeners the opportunity to make their own ideas of the way things should be.
The song was written February, 2002 for inclusion in a Chicago area radio station contest. It took less than a day to write and record the vocals and instruments and subsequent days were spent mixing and further arranging.
Lyrics
Black-owned corner stores ,
that we don’t own no more;
block club parties that
we used to have,
we don’t have no more!
Grandma’s gone and
there’s nobody at home.
Your momma’s gone ,
but she’s only twenty-four.
Your daddy’s gone,
but he was never there before,
on a Black Sunday Morning.
Chorus:
Your grandma‘s gone
and your momma‘s gone
and your daddy -
he was never there before.
Everything must change.
Everything must change,
but the Black Sunday Morning,
is still the same.
I got my Jesus
in a store-front church
across the street
from a liquor-store.
And when I didn’t go to church,
I’d watch the smurfs,
on a Black Sunday Morning.
Kids used to get
walked to school -
It’s really to bad that it stopped .
Now if your five, you qualify;
we’ve come so far,
but we’re so far behind.
But everything must change!
Repeat Chorus
You put on your food
before you leave;
a whole lot of chicken and
a pot of greens.
So it can be ready
for that evening.
You gotta get the kids up
‘cause you know
how long it takes them.
You gotta make a call to
your people Down South,
Gotta let them know everything’s alright
and before you leave
you gotta let the dog out..
Gotta get off the phone,
cause you know your running late.
Because the Black Sunday Morning
is still the same!
