Written in 1970's and recorded on the BF Deal Sampler Vol 1 on BF Deal records in 1975. Although it's in the Pop/Vocals genre this is more of a Folk/Jazz song, what I call Fazz. This is a comparison between the city and the jungle, and how they are very a like. This is the original version of this song, I later recorded it in 1980 in a very different style. |

Story Behind the Song
I once heard a story about the Amazon, where the only way the Indians could cross the Great river without being eaten by Pirahnas was to toss an offering in. Sometimes it would consist of the elderly infirmed, children, or any other animal or person that served no other purpose. Growing up in the city it sounded very much like life in teh big city where others would sacrifice their own loved ones for survival. The BF Deal Sampler was recorded in 1975 featuring four artists, myself, Nanci Griffith, Will Walker and Frank Zigal.
Lyrics
Verse 1
In the jungle of the Amazon,
There's a river by the same name,
That many men come and try to,
Try to tame! If you want to cross,
The river, you gotta pay your toll,
You gotta pay the price to the river,
Or you might lose your soul.
[Chorus]
Pirahna, what makes you so hungry?
Tell me, Pirahna How I wished I knew!
Pirahna!! You got to pay.
