On the day of New Year's Eve, 1929, a husband notices that when he mentions what day it is to his wife she doesn't care. Then he reflects on the fact that the down stock market has caused him to have to sell their favorite summer cottage, and he eventually fears the worst about the state of his marriage. |

Story Behind the Song
I thought the crash of 1929 might provide an appropriate setting to show a man's uncertainty about his world. His imagining the possibility of a chain reaction effect on his marriage is based on his wife's behavior, and so when he creates a scenerio in his mind, it is the way he addresses his potential reality.
Lyrics
Today is the last day of the year
I mentioned it to you at breakfast
But you didn't care
And I wish that I could figure out
What's going on with the stock market today
This hasn't been such a wonderful year
1929
Do you suppose when 1929 is over
We can pretend it's 1928 again?
I was hoping that it wouldn't have to happen
However we're going to have to sell our favorite summer cottage
Even though I had thought it would be ours
To the very end of our days
Say, how would you like to go there for one last stay?
Tonight we'll be at the Lexington Ballroom
I can almost see us there dancing
I can almost see you there in your red dress
You're smiling across the ballroom
But I don't see why
It must be Wilmington
The recently promoted vice president of
Hamilton Accessories for the Motor Car
He'll cut in tonight while we're dancing
And I'll never see you again
Today is the last day of the year
I mentioned it to you at breakfast
But you didn't care
And I wish that I could figure out
What's going on with the stock market today
