Story Behind the Song
This song is about a friend of Bill's who was rearended in his car and died. He had ordered a new set of drums and was waiting for them when it happened so he never got to play them. The song deals with the fact that any moment may be our last.
Lyrics
Red Drums
Like clockwork on the wall,
two hands aligned but stalled,
and then a third that speeds
unnecessarily.
Your car was parked
while the other one sped.
In your last second
the thought in your head
was you'll never play
on your new polished red
drums that you waited for
for so long.
But I know it's better than
for you to be stuck in a wheelchair
with broken feet and hands.
But either way,
your red drums won't be played.
Who'll kick them for you
and clean them for you too?
I've watched the seconds tick.
They seem so insignificant.
Now I know why
you thought of your red drums;
to make your last second
seem longer than one.
Ever since then
I just keep watching time
speed up and slow down,
But never wait for us.
I'll play them for you.
I never really knew you,
but I'll always remember you
and how every second
can be so different,
so permanent.
