Story Behind the Song
My main goal for this CD was to write soothing, uplifting songs to help people relax the mind and rejuvenate the spirit.
Water is the main theme for this CD, representing healing and regeneration, a journey from stress to relaxation, from mundanity to adventure, from pain to hope. In my research to find lullaby texts with water imagery, I found this poem, originally called “The White Seal”, by Rudyard Kilping.
This song is probably the more “pop/rock”-like of all the songs. It is not based on any particular folk style, (like some of the other songs) but is influenced by a wide variety of contemporary pop/rock music. (For example the use of syncopated rhythms and a driving pulse, etc)
Originally, I wrote the melody for my friend, Scott Townsend to sing, setting it in his tenor range… But, when I sang it to demonstrate it, it turned out to sound more suitable for my voice, even though it takes me lower in my range than my other songs (which is actually makes for a good contrast, and since I am a low alto, it brings out the lower part of my range that I don’t use often enough!) The melody illustrates the words, emphasizes their rise and fall, and brings out their meaning and imagery.
Scott has written and sung some of the backing vocals, which add even more of a pop/rock feel, with his gorgeous soft-rock voice. This is certainly one of my favorite songs on the CD.
Lyrics
Oh! hush thee, my baby,
The night is behind us,
And black are the waters
That sparkled so green.
The moon, o'er the combers,
Looks downward to find us
At rest in the hollows
That rustle between.
Where billow meets billow,
Then soft by thy pillow;
Ah, weary wee flipperling,
Curl at thy ease!
The storm shall not wake thee,
Nor shark overtake thee,
Asleep in the arms
Of the slow-swinging seas.
