Original folk acoustic rock song (words & music) based on Psalm 69. It could quite well be the best musical version of Psalm 69 you hear this week. If it's not, please let me know! |
CD: Geoff Rankin - The Sacred Hill
Label: Turn Around Music, Australia
Credits: Geoff Rankin, King David, God. |
Story Behind the Song
The song is a cracker really...
Based on Psalm 69 it's awash with scripture, sing-a-long melodies and catchy guitar riffs, now performed live with cellos. It's folk acoustic (at least acoustic when played live) rock. Is it bad to say my mum likes the song? She likes most of my songs... at least the ones she hears.
'Tight Squeeze' was written while sitting on my bed facing southeast. It's one of the only 2 songs i can remember writing while sitting on my bed facing southeast - my bed faces northwest. It took only an hour or so to write, if I remember correctly. I s'pose there wasn't much on TV that night. This paragraph is very strangely true for 'Walk With You' (track 7 off my CD - based on Psalm 23) too.
I wrote the chorus and thought, "Hey, that sounds a bit like Psalm 69" so I got out my bible, realised it wasn't as much like Psalm 69 as I thought, so instead of trying to change Psalm 69 to fit my chorus, I changed what I'd written to fit the psalm and filled in the verses with verses I liked. And the rest is history.
Most people that hear 'Tight Squeeze' like it. I have had at least one person buy my CD 'The Sacred Hill' purely because they like Psalm 69. Hopefully I haven't put them off the psalm.
It's the first song off my debut CD 'The Sacred Hill'. 'The Sacred Hill' has 9 other top songs on it, for the most part based on bible scriptures that were floating through the air at the time until I caught them and put them to music. In many translations, Psalm 69 is supposed to be played to the tune of "Lilies". I think my version of "Lilies" could quite well give the original version a run for its money.
'Tight Squeeze' has been played, along with a few other happy songs from my CD, on Brisbane radio station 96.5Fm and other fortunate stations around Australia.
Well that's about it for now. I hope you thought this was a good read. If it wasn't exciting enough, I do apologise. Some consolation may be to shoot me an email telling me to rewrite this 'Tight Squeeze' blurb - geoffrankin@hotmail.com.
Anyway... 'Tight Squeeze' sounds great performed live with cellos. Hope to see you in an audience bopping along to it sometime soon. Give me a nod during the song so I know you've heard it here before. I'll know what you mean
Lyrics
Tight Squeeze - track 1 from 'The Sacred Hill' written & performed by Geoff Rankin. Based on Psalm 69 (in the Bible).
And the waters are rising high up
Around my neck
My throat is parched and I am worn out
From calling for help
My eyes fail me looking for my GOD
O come save me
For so many hate me without any cause
They seek to destroy me
O GOD answer me with your sure salvation
Rescue me from this mire, do not let me sink
Within my love for you
I know you know I do
Within your love for me
Save me from my enemies
And this TIGHT SQUEEZE
May those who hope in you be not disgraced
Because of this man
May those who seek you be not put to shame
Because of who I am
For I endure scorn for your sake
And shame covers my face
I am a stranger to my own brothers
Alien to my own race
For zeal for your house consumes me
And the insults of those who insult you fall on
Tight Squeeze - I'm in a Tight Squeeze from my neck to my knees
Tight Squeeze - I'm in a Tight Squeeze, it really hurts when I sneeze
(Repeat to end)
