All the sounds on this piece were produced on the bass guitar. The percussive sounds are the strings of the bass "prepared" by placing alligator clips at harmonic points along the strings. The melody is from a Indonesian Pelog scale, with some very western elements added. |

Story Behind the Song
"Djam Karet" is an Indonesian phrase, which literally translated is "time is rubber" and is used to describe the somewhat elastic quality time takes in the tropics. Here it is used, as a pun, to describe the somewhat elastic quality time takes on in music.
This piece, which uses "prepared bass" (a phrase borrowed from John Cage) to emulate a Gamelan-type feel, was recorded nearly live in the studio. All the sounds were made on a four-string bass guitar, and aside from some delay, echo and reverb, there is no added studio gimmicky; all of the sounds were generated manually.
