A joyful, improvised arrangement of a great hymn. The timing of the lyrics and the traditional melody itself are said to be of West African origin, which is reflected in the style of this piano solo. |

Story Behind the Song
The famous hymn was penned by John Newton, a one time captain of a slave trading ship in the late 1700's. The traditional melody is anonymous and there are some authorities who consider it to be of West African origin. It makes sense that Newton would have been moved by the beautiful music of the West African slaves he was transporting. By some accounts, it was during one of the voyages where he was converted through the grace of our Almighty Lord and worked the rest of his life speaking out publicly in Britain against the inhumane practices he formerly had been a part of. Lyrics sometimes take on new meanings when a rhythm is shifted slighty, as was the attempt here. Recorded at "Note's Pad" in January, 2000.
