Story Behind the Song
One of the earliest songs that I can recall hearing and liking was "The Sound of Silence", as recorded by Simon and Garfunkel. I had a 45 of it as a litte kid, with "Homeward Bound" as the B-side. It has always been one of my favorites.
As I grew older and became a musician myself, I always wanted to cover the song, but none of my bands were ever stylistically appropriate.
When Steve and I got together in Beggarz Opera, people automatically compared us to S&G because we are an acoustic guitar-based vocal harmony duo. So we began to cover the song live, and were so happy with the results, we decided to record our own version of the song.
This was recorded at the Hit Kitchen with Jim Furrow engineering. Many of the arrangement ideas came from Jim. We wanted to stay away from the dated "folk rock" image that the song brings to mind(I'd like to state for the record that I have NEVER worn flowers in my hair, EVER), so we went in a modern rock/alternative direction.
Frankly, I never thought the Simon and Garfunkel version of the song was as good as it might have been, largely because it was an acoustic track that some producer grafted the other instruments onto years after its initial recording. It's just not as well-produced as their later records, when they were controlling the production process themselves. I feel like we nailed the track with a very different, very modern take that does not automatically call the other record to mind. This is very much a Beggarz Opera record.
Thanks for hitting our site. I hope you enjoy "The Sound of Silence".

Lyrics
Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
A world of people all alone
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared disturb the sound of silence
"Fool" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the well of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they'd made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence"
