Story Behind the Song
Makar needed a title song for its then untitled demo CD. Mark had written twenty songs and wasn't too psyched to have to write another one, especially one that needed such serious inspiration. Enter his lovely wife Andrea, a guitar and the odd town of Hackensack, NJ that bassist Dan Coates used to call home. On a trip back from Veggie Heaven (the best vegetarian Thai restaurant ever!) Andrea caught a glimpse of a discount store called 99 Cent Dreams. Mumbling incoherently and yanking on Dan's shoulder with the force of ten smurf divas she demanded we stop and behold what would soon become Makar legend. In one fateful moment the title of our album and the title track, destined to be written by the little musical powerhouse, became reality...and Mark was off the hook.
Lyrics
Every day I lose my soul,
in a pocket full of change and holes
Life isnt worth much at all,
as the dirty cops exert control
But theres a 99 cent dream for me,
if only theyd let me be
Because money is what makes you free,
at least thats what they keep telling me
Youll never get out of debt
even if you really try.
Its no longer 65
You will work until you die.
But theres a 99 cent dream for me,
if only theyd let me be
Because money is what makes you free,
at least thats what they keep telling me
I know I cant buy whatever I see,
but some day I will be free
I will have money,
look down on those with more
I will have money, but Ill always want more
Every day I lose my soul,
in a pocket full of change and holes
So buy my dream from me,
and I will be free.
And I will be free.
And I will be free.
