Story Behind the Song
This song started in 1996 as a four verse idea with the fingerpicked guitar riff ... and then it just sat, unfinished, in our songbook gathering dust. During the first week of Jan 2002, Todd decided it was high time to finish the song, and put the rest of it together after visiting at length with Sterling and friends.
The song is about wishing things could be "perfect", while knowing that life doesn't work that way. There's a lot more to it than that, but you'll have to ask Todd for the details on this song's inspiration.
Lyrics
My sweet girl, she knows why,
Lighting flows from gods' eyes...
My sweet boy, the world's outside,
You're free to roam; it's open wide...
I can't tell you where to go, my journey started late,
Don't follow me too long, you'll never find your way...
In my bed, the sleep like wine,
The drug my friend; the dream sublime...
Where's Daddy been, will he remind,
His soul to wake, his promise mine...
I'm always here even when I'm gone,
You can ask me everything though I might be wrong...
My sweet girl lays down the lines,
With careful grace she stays inside...
My sweet boy, his hope subsides,
Like youth it fails and fades with time...
Through chaos there is bliss, with order no escape,
Like a leaf wilts in the fall, my color's sure to fade...
