This is a reflective piece, which seems to be sad and happy at the same time. Originally it was meant to cover a scene change in my musical for children, "The Grand Adventures of Oliver Twist". In the play, Nancy has done the right thing and helped Oliver to find his way back to his new home. However, because of this great act of redemption she loses her life. |

Story Behind the Song
I was looking for music that would make the audience sad while we changed sets in our school musical "The Adventures of Oliver Twist". Since the performers are children, Nancy's murder is only hinted at in the play, not acted out. This piece was supposed to help our audience realize that something sad had happened after the angry Bill promises Fagin that he will "Look after Nancy". Nancy is the angel in the title, and she has sacrificed her life for Oliver, after recapturing a piece of her own humanity. Selfless sacrifice which Dickens rewards with an evil end.
Oddly, the song has a place for me beyond the musical, as on those days where I need reflection time. It is certainly mellow and features one of the greatest instruments, the oboe. When it is just the oboe and the guitar, it sounds sad, contemplative. When the Vocal ah's are added, it almost sounds like a celebration. Pretty cool for music that is just written to cover a scene change if you ask me.
