Story Behind the Song
"Robin Hood: A Love Story" is a play that I have written for my Performers' Club at school to do as our big spring musical. It is a spoof which is honestly very funny, yet touching. After working with 11 and 12 year old kids for many years, I decided to write for them an adventure and love story to point out the differences between your dreams for the future and your dreams for the present. A love story for preteens is what you get.
This is a rewrite of my very first play. I have a rule in my club that if you audition I will give you a speaking part, and this time around I had way more students interested. Thus, I needed another 10 speaking parts in my play. I chose to put in speaking mimes. The results, of course, are hysterical. These mimes talk, sing and dance. They are also the soldiers of Prince John. So the question is, are they really bad mimes becuase they talk or are they really bad mimes becuase they hang out with the evil prince?
This is the song and dance number, and is written to showcase the talents of four of our students who have wonderful voices. I have decided to really use these singers to explore some intersting, beautiful harmonies.
The piece was created with Band-In-A-Box 10, and then the vocals were added in Cubasis VST. This is our practice track, meaning it is the one the kids use to learn the song and is sung by me. You will just have to imagine how several young voices will make it sound.
Lyrics
Spoken:
Clap along!
We are the mimes and this is our song!
Singing:
In the forest is where we sat,
waving back and forth
like we was grass, (oh oh oh)
Sitting there, not saying a word,
we were quiet, despite what you heard.
Chorus
We are the singing mimes,
we are the dancing mimes,
Really bad mimes we may be,
but we sing and dance fabulously!
Arguing about what we can do,
you say mimes can't talk
but we disagree with you, (oh oh oh)
Thought your thieves were on their way,
but bad things happened,
what can I say?
Robin, his men, and all their wives,
they showed up,
it was quite a surprise (suh-suh-prise).
But who could guess what he would do next,
your evil plan was being wrecked!
Chorus
Robin tried to trick us all,
but for his lies,
we did not fall (no, no, no),
And then he found our weakest link,
he tried to make us have to think.
Married men ran round the stage,
a strange shooking sound
they all made, (shook, shook, shook)
Crafty crew, those crafty foxes,
we just couldn't think outside their boxes.
Chorus
We tried to run and then we cried,
we tried to save our miserable hides
(wah, wah, wah),
But push and push as we would do,
there was no way to bring
the gold back to you.
Robin and Mar-i-an got away,
not much else for us to say, (say, say say)
And despite what we would wish,
it is time for our song's big finish.
Chorus several times
