Story Behind the Song
This gem was created freestyle one evening in front of Kashiwa train station. The then-instrumentation was 2 guitars and a pianica. The version you hear, which was recorded on an 8-track some months later utilizes only one guitar and some various percussive instruments. Much thanks go out to Cup Sake for this one.
Lyrics
This is a song from back in my day...this is a reminiscent song of Russia and the wonderful memories I took along.
My mule he died just yesterday
And I buried him in the mud
And everybody still talks about
How badly he is missed.
But me, I expected it to happen
I knew he'd lost control
When he plowed my fields 17 times
And he didn't even take a break.
Everybody says, hey Shlomo
Say, why do you miss your mule?
He treated you bad, he was a fool
And he kicked you in ze butt.
I said, yes that is true
My mule, he was not so good
But he plowed my field and he ate his hay
And this is why he should
Be honoured and respected
Like a good mule should
So I sing thing song and I drink my vodka
And I play this piece of wood.
I walk along the steppes of Russia
Singing my little song
Singing and dancing and singing and singing
And tip-toping along.
Some people say, some people do
But me, me, me, I just sing
I sing and I reminisce, I sing and I reminisce
And I sing about this mule.
There are many rumors going around
My little Russian town
They said me and my mule, oh they said
We got a little too close.
Sure, maybe I touched my mule a little bit too much once behind the shed
But maybe he liked it
Is it that wrong
Is it wrong for a man to love his mule?
Oh mister mule, why did you leave me?
I loved you so
You were the best little animal a man has ever known
Please come back to me.
