Story Behind the Song
When I first moved up to Cedar Rapids, Iowa from a smaller town in south central Iowa, I attended a guitar clinic with an instructor who was showing all types of cross-genre playing. All acoustic guitar oriented, he demonstrated finger-picking, classical, fusion, and open tuning. This was my first experience using open tuning other than some minor stuff I dabbled in while growing up. It was really quite fun and came remarkably easy for me given the fact that I'm a metalhead. My goal as a guitar player has always been to be able to stand on my own as a musician; without having to rely on a band, another guitar player or backup instrumentalist, or a vocalist. Open tuning brought me a little closer to that goal.
I went home from the clinic with my guitar still tuned to open D. I wrote this song fairly quickly and it's actually dedicated to my pets as well as God. Whenever I play guitar at my house, I always have an animal around me. If I'm outside on my porch, my dogs are with me. If I'm on the couch, I have a cat next to me and a dog at my foot. When I'm downstairs cranking out of my 5150, I have a cat and/or a dog waiting in the other room or coming in when it's quiet. That's why I named this song after Psalm 150:6; Let everything that hath breath, Praise the Lord. This song really marks another level in my composition.
