A song that takes the pagan from Imbolc to Beltane, celebrating the blessings of spring. It's done in the form of a madrigal, but we only have a couple of the parts recorded thus far. |
Credits: Lyrics and music by Siobhaidh, alto harmony by Sable, performed by Siobhaidh and Sable |
Story Behind the Song
Siobhaidh wanted to enter a Society for Creative Anachronism bardic competition, and the theme was to write a spring madrigal, at a May event. For Siobhaidh who, like me, is a Celtic pagan, the beginning of spring is marked by Imbolc and not by Beltane (that would be the beginning of summer,) so she tried to find a compromise between the varying concepts and just celebrate all of spring. She didn't win the competition, but this first original piece of hers inspired her to continue writing. It was with great joy and excitement that I set about to a harmony when she offered this piece for our ensemble.
Lyrics
Mothers watch and keep the day
While the lambs leap and play
List the wind, a gentle breeze
Spring is here, a time of ease
CHORUS:
Emerald green of elder year,
Backdrop for the newborn spear;
Brightly sing the birds on high!
Wake the world as spring draws nigh!
Sun grows strong and lights the earth
Brings the dawning of rebirth
Sing the song, dance the step
Well the seed the earth has kept
CHORUS
Bring your love and bring your wife!
Celebrate the way of life!
Sun and moon, and star and sky,
Laugh and sing as night draws nigh
CHORUS
