Story Behind the Song
Ages ago I wrote this song, before Where I Used to Live, and thought it was really just an abstract, wierd song that I wasn't gonna ever really do much with, so I never refined the lyrics or tried to make much more sense out of 'em, but now my friend Ron (www.mp3.com/ruronny, www.mp3.com/loosefloorboards, bassist of my band engRish) has analyized and explained how the lyrics work, when I really never tried to do that. When I wrote it, I wrote it so that each line made sense by itself with what I was feeling then, and didn't try to connect them, but that's actually what the song turned out to be about, a situation, abstractly defined. Here's the explanation:
this is bascially a story about someone (proabbyl male) who has been wanting somethign for along time,
but has never gotten it. It's may be the woman of his dreams, it may be self realization, or finally getting
some where in life. This song is bascially descibing the situation and what happens when he finally gets
what he wants. Ok well, here is a line by line breakdown to convince you.
"Sunshine heading over the furthest fields. "
Sunshine illuminating a world that was dark, the world before when he didn't have this one special thing.
It's the 'Furthest field' because it si somethign that has seemed so far away and unobtainable.
"Shadows dissapear before my eyes."
the shadows of his former life are gone now, as the sun, or thing he wants, finally rises.
"Fleeting moments have only seconds left."
Fleeting moments....fleeting implies temporary, or quick to leave. All of the little things
in life that he delt with before will now be replaced with this solid, firm event. perhaps
the first event in his life that is for certain.
"Extending space in front of me."
Extending space is obviously the expanding possiblities that this young man now has.
His life feels right for the first time, and anythign is possible.
"And all things together are working to make things right."
Everythign is falling into place. It seems as if life is finally what he wanted it to be.
He finally sees his way, and everythign is perfect.
"Oranges and lemons are keeping time."
Oranges an lemons, as everyone knows, are fruit. Fruits are plants, and plants in general grow in
the spring, ripen in the summer, and then the plant asically stops producing for the winter then
start all over. They are "keeping time" because this process happens by seasons. It is possible to keep
time in seasons. It's almost as if they are a clock keeping track of when this event will occur. this also
goes with teh previous line that "all things together are workign to make thigns right"
"Wonders come through ways unseen."
Some say "god works in mysterious ways". God is unseen, and produces wonders. Perhaps it's fate,
and not God. either way, it says things happen, and we don't always knwo the reasons why.
"Leaves blowing silently in the wind."
perhaps these are the leaves of the trees the oranges and lemons are on, and they are moving around
because of the wind. maybe they are silent because the young man is so focused on the events at hand,
that he doesn't even notice. Or perhaps it's the leaves on the ground floating about, jsut being a part of
nature. It brings back the holistic approach to the song.
"Peels fall to the ground So far below this."
Peels falling off are perhaps the outer shell the man had. Or it may even be just the old way of life is
gone. it's falling away, far away, to where it'll never come back. This is supported by the fact that
no one would rather eat the peel than the fruit inside. the bad is beign shed to reveal the good.
"Waiting long enough will make you mine."
This guy has waited for some time. Waiting for things to be right, so that he may become the person he
wanted to be. Also good things come to those who wait.
"Grass grows slowly with only air"
Grass in this sentence is people/a person. A person cannot grow as a person if they are only given one
specific thing. They need many many things to be happy and healthy. there is a pyramid of needs made by
some guy that out line this principle. People are complicated and nothing is just balck and white.
"Catalysts speed up processes so long."
this is a reference to whatever triggered this event to happen. It was the trigger that the fruit was
counting to. it acted as a catalyst to begin this guys new life. Or maybe it is a statement of hope saying
that even if your life is bad, that if you work at it (catalyst) then eventually (so long) you will finally
get what you want, which this guy did.
so that's it.
And there is a funny interp. that is actually about fruit. and you have to wait for things to ripen,
so "waiting long enoguh will make you mine"
thanks for a great song doug! :)
Thank you, Ron
Lyrics
Sun shining over the furthest peak
Shadows dissapear before my eyes
Fleeting moments have only seconds left
Expanding space in front of me
All things working together to make things right
Oranges and lemons are keeping time
Wonders come through ways unseen
Leaves blowing silently in the wind
Peels fall to the ground so far below this
Waiting long enough will make you mine
All things working together to make things right
Oranges and lemons are keeping time
Grass grows slowly with only air
Catalysts speed up processes so long
All things working together to make things right
Oranges and lemons are keeping time
Acapella:
Waiting long enough will make you mine
