Story Behind the Song
Psalm 16; Rev. 1:4-8
Several years ago, I was playing in a band and had the opportunity to perform at Evergreen in Toronto, home of the Yonge St. Mission. We had the opportunity to stay overnight and explore the inner city. As one of their leaders briefed us on what to expect, he asked the question, "What do youth living on the streets need most?" He surprised me when he answered 'Safety'. Safe places. Safe relationships. I have since reflected on the Safe character of God. Past, present and future safety in the midst of tumultous times.
Lyrics
VERSE 1
When You formed me in the womb
When You rose out of the tomb
And heaven's light shone in the room
I was safe, I was safe
CHORUS
If nothing else is true
I can trust in You
You are my security
I'm imprisoned but I'm free
Feed me with Your wine and bread
Rescue from the devil's dread
Warming fire of love divine
I will watch the shadows
Shine, shine, shine
VERSE 2
When the flood waters rise
When the darkness veils my eyes
And all creation starts to cry
I am safe, I am safe
VERSE 3
When martyr fires light the sky
When my teardrops will not dry
And the reaper lifts his scythe
I will be safe, I will be safe
