    Story Behind the Song
Inspired by a visit to a lovely village in County Gallway.

    Lyrics
    The Quay At Kinvara
by Richard Carson Morton copyright 2001

The times they are hard, dear, and I must be going
Across to Chicago, in far Americay
But I will send for you as soon as I'm able
And we will be married, I'll give you my name

    chorus
She stands all alone on the Quay at Kinvara
Clutching her shawl, 'gainst a cold western breeze
I can still see her there as I slip from the harbour
Her hair blowing wildly and waving at me

I worked in the stockyards in heat like a furnace
Wielding the axe and the saw and the knife
But I slipped on the blood and fell on the sharp blade
They carried me off barely clinging to life

    chorus

I was nursed back to health by a young girl from Belfast
But my leg was cut badly and I was left lame
So I worked taking stock in her own father's warehouse
And I married that girl and I gave her my name

    chorus

As I lay on the bed with my family around me
I think of the sorrow and joy we have shared
As I draw my last breath and the darkness surrounds me
May God forgive me, I still here there
