Story Behind the Song
The musical idea of Dun Ollaigh (Dunollie) came to me while I was viewing the remains of Dunollie Castle near Oban, Scotland one
winter afternoon. My plan was for the guitar to immitate the sound of bagpipes with some 'ghostly' orchestration for a back-drop and
a human voice supplying some 'haunts'. I hammered out the guitar melody and some of the vocal line, knowing that the piece was never
going to be a stand-alone guitar solo. I had to wait three years before the opportunity to record it with the right musicians came about.
My two collaborators and I had so much fun recording Dun Ollaigh, that we decided to record a few more songs, then a few more... and
the musical trio, August, was born.
In this recording, the guitar is trippled, the voice doubled, and the funny sounding horn in the beginning and end of the song are produced
by the guitar using an E-bow with some massive echo effects. We later developed a live version of Dun Ollaigh
Lyrics
There is actually one lyric in Dun Ollaigh. If you listen closely you will hear the
'ghost' whisper "Buidh no Bas!" (boo-ee no bass) a battle cry of the Clan Mac Dougal,
who owned Dunollie Castle in its glory-days.
