Story Behind the Song
The title of this tune is "Hope Deferred." It alludes the fact that, many of us, started out with a set of dreams and goals that seemed to become progressively more elusive as the years pass. Family needs further seem to keep the rules of the game changing. Yet, we NEVER let those dreams fade. We simply adjust our view of those goals and dreams such that we can deal with the changes superimosed on our experience. We may adjust those goals to fit our own personal growth. Well, this tune is sort of an erie tone poem paying homage to my own experience with this. The dark and brooding tone aludes to a sense of feeling like one is stuck in a tunnel not allowing one to see those dreams anymore. The sudden change from a D pedal to a C pedal with the floating triads at the end and finally drifting into the Spanish scale alludes to a sense of wonder at seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The final lydian mode at the very end alludes to the notion that we may not know exactly how our dreams will have changed as we get to the light. There is still mystery and wonder - something not exclusively reserved for the young - an ageless experience! I like the use of trumpet on something like this. The tone of the instrument suggests a light and airyness that is, to me, reminiscent of a hope only deferred, not dashed.
