    Story Behind the Song
I wrote the song sitting on a dock along the water in Belgrade lakes Maine. I remember it being night time, and I was at a party and got inspired to write the song. My girlfriend couldn't come up that weekend, and I wanted to write her a love song.

Earlier that day, I was in a boat with my friend Adam, and we were heading towards town and we ran out of gas. We of course did not have cell phones and we started waving down this boat that came to us going one mile an hour. When they finally got there, they towed us to town and to thank them for saving us we did what any good sealubbers would do, and bought them a six pack of beer.

So I came up for the idea of this song that day. I think I read the saying "love breaks all the rules" in a book of poems for a college poetry book and remembered really liking it. This was Jason Gardner's favorite song on the album, and he did really cool backup vocals when we recorded it. Goody used his mandostrat, this little Fender electric mandolin/guitar which he paired with a volume pedal and delay and he got some really cool sounds.

    Lyrics
I feel my ship come inside your shores
We've never come this close before
Life's never been so beautiful you know
How much longer will I have to wait
Feel an open door close upon our fate
We rise so high to fall in love so low

Do you feel love come inside your shores?
Or hearts torn out thrown on the floor?
I gave my all and you showed me the door

Wherever you will go, whatever you will go through
It breaks my heart to tell you
Well, Love breaks all the rules

Will I follow my foolish pride
Or find familiar love in a stranger's eyes?
This place is old once seemed so new to me
The wind has blown the matches of names
That lit the spark of our old flames
These burning out and fading memories

Do you feel love's sparks light these shores?
Or hearts torn out thrown on the floor?
You gave your all and I showed you the door

Wherever you will go, whatever you will go through
It breaks my heart to tell you
Well, Love breaks all the rules

Well you've been so good to me
    Never had someone so kind
And I know that somethings built to last
    Withstand the test of time
I see ten thousand million falling in and out
    Coming down from heavens gates
I see thousands more floating towards the shores
    Where I patiently wait

Do you feel love's sparks light these shores?
Or hearts torn out thrown on the floor?
I'll give my all, if you'll show me the door

Wherever you will go, whatever you will go through
It breaks my heart to tell you
Well, Love breaks all the rules
    Whatever you will know
Whatever you once thought that you knew
It breaks my heart to tell you
Well, Love breaks all the rules
