Story Behind the Song
My name is Stephen Bockrath. I am a singer/songwriter. My E-mail address is steve-bockrath@worldnet.att.net.I have a page posted at my company's web address — http://www.fastaco.com/music.htm and at http://www.mp3.com/artists/5/stephen_bockrath.html
I sing songs, love songs mostly. I try to write as melodically as I can. I guess you could compare my music to my influences, the Byrds mostly. I was a choirboy growing up, so I love harmony (which explains why the Byrds and Beatles fascinated me) My band played concerts when I was a kid. We opened for the Eagles twice when they first started (their first tour for "Take It Easy".) They were into exactly the same thing I was ... melody, structure and harmony. I also loved Seals & Crofts. We opened for them a couple times. I LOVED their songs, their sound, live that is. I didn't care for their recordings so much, especially the later stuff, but their early stuff, in concert, was incredible.
I try to create an intimacy with my voice, try to make the listener feel something. I don't use much echo on my voice. I like it up front where you can hear every little inflection. The little things make a good vocal. My dad loved Sinatra. He would have Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Steve Gorme on the phono all the time while he and my mom would dance. I didn't think much of it, I guess like water to a fish. I was into my choir music. Every once in a while a popular song would get to me. The Beach Boys "I Get Around" and "In My Room" (GREAT! harmony), "Da Do Ron Ron". Wonderful. And then when I started high school, The Beatles, and everything that meant. Only later did I start listening to Sinatra, his phrasing, the way he caresses the sound of each word, the way he starts and stops every syllable. He was the personification of all the lessons I was taught by my choir director, Mr. Wills (the greatest musician I've ever been around, my childhood hero. Still is.) Frank Sinatra is just GREAT! And when he got together with Nelson Riddle ... Magic!
Anyway, Catholic church music, Frank Sinatra, Mr. Wills, the Beatles and the Byrds. My influences.
I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, spent all my youth there. I ended up in Austin, TX about 1981. Best thing that happened to me. There is a creative energy in Austin. My friend MaryAnn (my lyricist on a lot of my stuff) says its the Indian spirits. She's really into all that. She's part Indian. Her E-mail name is cosmicma@msn.com, cosmic ... get it? She's stopped trying to convince me, but she just lives it. She's wonderful. Maybe she's right. I started writing about that time. Those were the happiest years of my life 1981-1986. Lots of songs were written then. Austin is incredible. Visit it if you ever have the chance. It's getting a little crowded now, but it's still great! I live in Fort Worth now. I really like Fort Worth. It's got an Austin feel to me, but not so crowded. I'ts home. I can go to Austin whenever I want. SXSW is happening March 16 to the 21st. I'll probably go and see a few bands.
I play the guitar and the bass. I kinda just got stuck on the bass. We were out of town on a gig, the bass player didn't show, or got fired (?) and I had to fill in. By the end of the week I was OK. I just kept on doin it from then on. I started playing guitar when I was 15. My mom bought me a baby blue Fender Mustang, my first electric guitar. Before that I learned on a $50 acoustic, which I would play until my fingers bled, the strings were so high off the neck. People comment how easy it looks when I play. I still remember my bloody fingers. If it looks easy, it's because I practice, practice, practice.
Right now I have a Marten D-35, a Yamaha acoustic(I write all my songs on it. I just like it), a Stephens acoustic 12 String, a Steinberger 6 string and bass. I write and record, but I haven't performed since 1975. I've been invited, but I'm so shy it scares me too much to seriously consider doing it. I was always part of a band before. Now that I'm a single, I'll stick to the recording studio thank you. I'll only perform again if the gig is big enough I can hire the band I want, and have the sound the way I want.
Lyrics
Can't you see I'm trying to understand you,
All the things you're sayin', all the things that you do.
And I'm tryin' to be the one to see the truth in the things you say.
I keep trying to understand you! Don't throw that away.
You must need to be the center of every thought.
You must need to be the object of desire.
But no matter how hard I try I just can't deny
I’ve come to want you baby, but it's no good.
I try to look past you but you can’t be ignored.
I try to shut off my feelings but I just feel more.
I know (I know, I know, I know) I need you so, I can't change the way
My heart pounds when I'm around you. That won't go away.
You've become the center (center) of my every thought.
You've become the object of all my desire,
And no matter how hard I try I just can't deny
I've come to want you baby, cause you're so good.
Should I keep on fighting the things that I feel?
Should I keep denying the needs that are real?
Should I give it time (and time and time) in time to see what I want.
I can get over you baby when I see what you cost.
It's not the kind of love I can be proud to say I feel.
It's not the kind of love that can bring me any joy.
But no matter how hard I try I just can't deny
I've come to want you baby, though it's no good.
