Story Behind the Song
The opening line, "In a world so full of faces, how can I feel all alone?" sets the tone for this haunting ballad. The message is that we can find inner strength to go on, even if life is hard on us. Numerous rewrites led to this current version, and I'm not entirely certain that I'm done with it yet.
Before I added background vocals in the chorus, I performed the song live at the 1992 BC Winter Games Opening Ceremonies. Adding the BG vocals, though, really added depth to the overall sound.
Once again, this song went to cassette multitrack, with the sequenced tracks courtesy of a Korg T1, and the masterful live guitar performed by my good friend, Brad Salmon, the only truly humble lead guitar player I've ever met (yet).
Lyrics
In a world so full of faces, how can I feel all alone
I’m thinkin’ of familiar places, where I’ve been far from home
I’ll never let go of the dreams I live for each day
It’s a long way back home, and I wanna be there to stay
CHORUS
When you feel like slippin’ away
And you must keep yourself from fallin’
Just hold on to your flame
Just hold on to your flame
See what’s in the mirror, starin’ back with hoping eyes
There is a vague expression helping me to realize
That I can’t let go of the dreams I live for each day
It’s a long way back home, and I wanna be there to stay
CHORUS
BRIDGE
I’ll never let go of the dreams I live for each day
It’s a long, long way back home
And I wanna, I wanna be there to stay, oh-oh
CHORUS
Just hold on, hold on to your flame
Just hold on to your flame
