Story Behind the Song
I am half Japanese.
I went to see Haruki Murakami speak at the New School. He's the author of one of my favorite books, The Wind-up Bird Chronicles.
In the book, there is a line that keeps getting crossed between normal, every day life, and a dream like world of fates, extra knowledge, meaning, and past events. Someone asked Murakami why he put historical accuracy into his writing.
He said (rough quote) "I think that we are shaped, imprinted in ways we might not realize by history. Although we might not have lived in 1915, our parents or grandparents did, and what they saw and did changed them. Growing up with them, we were changed by the events; even distant, national events."
My family was relocated during WWII. I have always liked haiku.
So I wrote lyrics for the chorus that had haiku suspended feeling, and thought about the edge of knowing.
this song took about a year to complete, from initial experiments with filtering the drums, to adding layers, to lyrics. It was one of the prototypes for the whole album--I did it all experimentally, not knowing what the process or sound would be, but just by playing a little each day.

Lyrics
track 01
part of me is made of air
there are nothings
where there was going to be
something there
i’m just beginning to see
how the languages lost in time
are a part of me
I want to take a spotlight
and shine it along the ground
and walk along it
even as the earth curves away
to find out
where it ends
part of me
is out of sense
written in the past
spoken in the future tense
my hand reaches out
to grasp what is surely there
on the border of absence
and presence
i can see where the past
i can see where nothing
i can see where the end is a part of me
