Story Behind the Song
“Every town holds a hero who faced evil with their own eyes,
Felt the duty of a nation for something they despised,”
From “Bitter Colored Ribbons” on the CD, neuma (2001)
It was Memorial Day 1999, and I was working retail as our store was holding a Memorial Day Sale. I began to ask myself why such a holiday existed and how having special sales helped commemorate it. Perhaps it supported the holiday by boosting the economy, because the weekend is usually strong retail sales period. However, people who came in the store really didn’t seem to have remembrance in mind, except for remembering that towels are on sale so they’d better get in quick. My mind began to think of a time when there were yellow ribbons around trees for soldiers gone to war. I thought how unique the choice of yellow—bright, yet a bitter reminder. The lyric for “Bitter Colored Ribbons” was written shortly after close of business that day. I felt it was my pause to remember and be thankful. I emailed it to Alix, who took care of the piano and vocal melody. The rest is on CD.
