Story Behind the Song
America is expert at riding the fence on issues where human rights conflict with economic interests. This song reflects the anger felt by the band members (all of them either the chilodren of immigrants or immigrants themselves) at the injustice of a system which blatantly ignores the hypocisy of claiming idelas such as "Bring me your poor, your weak, and your hungry..." (inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty) while gearing its laws to prevent the admittance of such immigrants, especially when all they want to do is to work to improve their lot in life and provide some hope for the future generations of their family.
Lyrics
So this is the land of the free..?
The one that you, 'tis of thee'..?
But I can't bring my family
So they can be close to me.
I work at a job, maybe two,
And I work as hard as you,
ButI can't earn as much as you do.
Tell me, why can't I?
Why can't I be just like you?
You know what you look like to me?
Not what you promised to be...
Is THIS what you call being free?
You're nothing but a goddamn, motherfucking U.S. Certified hypocrite!
I can't have a say on who my taxes pay
Or who gets to kill who or send kids away.
Because I can't understand what you say I'm subdued by the American way.
I work at a job maybe two
And I work as hard as you,
But I can't earn as much as you do.
Tell me why should I try to be,
Why should I be just like you?
U.S. Certified hypocrite!
