Story Behind the Song
If you haven't guessed, this was the song I wrote to sing when I proposed to Stephanie.
I started writing the song after seeing Mr. Holland's Opus in January 1997. It was finally completed in the summertime. We got engaged at Christmas.
God's hand was all over our engagement. In the summer I was auditioning members for a band. One of the guys was from Windsor, Ontario, close to London, where Stephanie's family still live today.
In August I asked him for some ideas on where I might be able to sing my proposal, using a grand piano. He suggested a quaint little restaurant called "Michael's on the Thames", where he and his wife got engaged years before. I contacted the restaurant and was able to book a table right beside the piano for December 27, 1997.
I then called Steph's mom and let her know that I wanted to take them out for a post-Christmas dinner when we were in town. No special occasion, only that this would be our first London Christmas together. The catch was that it was a surprise for Steph, so she had to make it sound like it was her idea. Remember, this was in August, planning for December.
The months went by so slowly (as the songs say). I finally found the PERFECT engagement ring a week before we left for London Ontario. I hid it in my bags as we travelled, and had to keep it under cover for at least another week. The tension of keeping this secret was killing me!
Finally, December 27th came. That morning Steph's mom told her that we were all going out to dinner, and to dress up nice. Steph relayed the message to me, and we all got dressed up nice.
We got to the restaurant, I slipped the ring to Jack, the maitre'd, without anyone noticing, and we got to sit right beside the piano. Steph, her parents, her younger brother, and I ordered our meals, and then Ed the piano player took his place. He played some really romantic jazz standards. Stephanie was already melting.
After a really messy appetizer, Steph got up to wash her hands. At that time her mom asked me if I was going to let it on that it was MY idea to go out to this fancy restaurant. I replied with a question, "I suppose you're wondering why we're all here?" They nodded in expectant agreement. I continued, "I would like your permission to marry your daughter."
Their jaws hit the floor with a resounding thud. Of course they said "yes", but the pure timing of my request was perfect.
Stephanie returned to the table. Her parents tried to make light conversation, but their hearts by this point were also giddy with excitement. We ate our meals in relative silence, except a comment from Steph that maybe I should ask to play the piano.
Before dessert was ordered, Jack came and asked ME if I would like to play the piano. Steph asked, "How does he know you know how to play?" I smiled and replied, "Everyone in Vancouver plays the piano.
I sang the song. Steph didn't know what hit her. Stunned, she replied to my bent-knee request, "Of course I'll marry you."
The rest is history.

STEPHANIE'S SONG (WE FOUND LOVE)
Music & Lyrics Copyright © 1997 Tony Quays (SOCAN)
You are gold to me, diamonds and pearls
You're everything I hold precious in the world
You're my symphony, my orchestra, too
I could spend a lifetime making music with you
Take my hand, hold me tight
In this world of darkness, you know we'll shine the light
WE FOUND LOVE
ALL THE HEAVENS REJOICE
WE ARE ONE HEARTBEAT,
ONE HAND, AND ONE VOICE
WE FOUND LOVE,
HERE IN GOD'S TENDER CARE
STEPHANIE,
WE HAVE A LIFETIME OF LOVE
WE CAN SHARE
I can feel your heart from the touch of your hand
Just you bein' near me shakes the ground where I stand
You're so beautiful from your head to your soul
When you give me love, I swear, my heart overflows
Take my hand,
Stephanie, will you be my wife?
No one's ever made me want so much from this life!
repeat chorus
STEPHANIE, I'M ON MY KNEES
I PROMISE TO LOVE YOU WITH ALL OF MY HEART
I PROMISE TO CHERISH YOU RIGHT FROM THE START
AS EACH DAY UNFOLDS,
I KNOW OUR LOVE WILL GROW
MORE AND MORE
interlude
repeat chorus
STEPHANIE, WE HAVE A LIFETIME
AN ETERNITY WITH GOD AS OUR LIFELINE
I LOVE YOU PLEASE, STEPHANIE,
WLL YOU MARRY ME?
