Story Behind the Song
Rick Duarte (lead singer/guitarist): "This was the newest song on the record. I wrote all the music and we tracked it all quite quickly. Mark Tuttle (guitarist) had put together all the lyrics and melody down on a scratch track. I needed something more in my range but I liked the direction and the subject matter. The chorus line is genius! So I rewrote the verses and bridge based on the main hook of the song, into my vocal range and style.
The song is really about being able to be a better person after someone has taken you for granted. It's also about taking the high road in a situation where things can go very bad. It makes you look at your expectations of others and consequently yourself.
Lyrics
Better than Before
With a dumpster, full of blessings it’s so easy, so damn easy baby, to see your enemies. Now you’re searching for perfection but reflections don’t agree, with your perception of the world, so tell me what
does that make me? Better than before, better than before, I’m better than before, I met you.
Go! Free form is the way that you’re gonna make it melt down and I’ll be there when it goes down. Will you live for me, would you die for me? Can I see you when I’m turning on my tv?
I take my time. You sit and cry. We let sparks fly, you say goodbye, I close my eyes. Cuz you’re looking for perfection but reflections don’t agree with your perception of yourself. So tell me what does that make me?
CHORUS. “And so you bite the hand that feeds you and you leave the one that needs you. You sit back,
making your cracks, like a stab in back! See you wouldn’t want to be you! Now your sorry and you say you really miss me! You’ll make it better and you never meant to diss me! It’s like dysfunction tasted better
when you kissed me And total happiness the only thing you wished me! Well at least I know I’m free,
so baby what does that make me?”
CHORUS. Go! Free form is the way that you’re gonna make it melt down and I’ll be there when it goes down. Will you live for me, would you die for me? Can I see you when I’m turning on my tv?
