Story Behind the Song
This was written shortly after punk rock hit the streets in the early seventies. Intended as a parody of the Sex-Pistols “Anarchy in the U.K” - it seeks to make the point that for many people their atitude to life wasn’t ‘anarchy‘, but total apathy, particularly when it came to spirituality. This version comes from a time when I was playing in God-Rock band “Bananas”.. and features Gary Dean on the drums, Ely on the Bass and self on guitar. Rob Fisher also adds his voice to the rest when it comes to the singing (?) of the chorus.
Back then I was still using two Akai 4000 Tape Decks. We recorded the bass, drums and guitars in the vestry of a church in West Kirby, Merseyside and then shouted the vocals over the top as we dubbed it onto the second machine.(We only had 2 pairs of headphones and two mikes). The idea of recording it was to send as a demo to get us to play at the ‘Greenbelt’ Christian Festival in 1978. Well, we did send off the recording and they did ask us to play, but unfortunatly Gary the drummer had a serious eye injury the weekend we were supposed to be there and so we never did get to go. Our moment for being a lunchtime legend in the Christian Ghetto never materialised. The band broke up not long after!
Lyrics
Apathy in the U.K.
Adrian Pratt 1976
I don’t want to work and I don’t want to play,
I don’t want to love and I don’t want to hate,
I don’t want to give and I don’t want to take,
I don’t want to smile and I don’t want to state,
I don’t want to move and I don’t want to breathe,
I don’t want to stay and I don’t want to leave.
Oh, Oh, It’s Apathy
Don’t want to listen, Don’t want to talk,
Don’t want to run, Don’t want to walk,
Don’t want to be bold, Don’t want to be meek,
Don’t want to shout, Don’t want to speak,
Don’t want to watch, Don’t want to see,
Oh, Oh, It’s Apathy
Don’t wanna be in the bourgeoisie,
Don’t wanna be aristocracy,
Don’t want emotion, Don’t want nothin’
Don’t want God and I don’t want Satan,
I don’t want me and I don’t want you,
I don’t even care what I do,
I don’t give an interest in anything,
I’m myself and I don’t want to be,
Oh, Oh, It’s Apathy
