A sensitive and poetic reading of the Schumann Symphonic Etudes by Dimitris Sgouros, 1987 Melbourne Concert Hall.
    Credits: Dimitris Sgouros (pianist)

    Story Behind the Song
Schumann's Etudes Symphoniques was first published in 1837 and is one of the great cycle of piano works including Carnaval and the Fantasy in C which seemed to flow so effortlessly from the young composers fertile imagination. The Etudes Symphoniques was re-published in 1852 with alterations by the composer intended to clarify the piano writing and with the title changed to Etudes en Forme de Variations. The original title seems, however, to have always been preferred by performers. The beautiful melancholic theme on which the work is based was composed by his friend Baron Von Fricken, a distinguished musical amateur.
The etudes or variations each explore a different dimension of piano technique, especially the particular style of technique found throughout Schumann's piano compositions. Schumann composed five etudes additional to those published in the two original editions which are also of extraordinary beauty. When Brahms re-edited the work for his edition of 1893 he included these "posthumous" etudes as an appendix. In this performance Dimitris Sgouros incorporates the "posthumous" etudes between the etudes of the original published work. The beauty and inventiveness of the etudes is complemented by an elaborate finale based on a theme from Marschner's "Der Templer und die Judin" which brings the work to a rousing conclusion.
