A mid-sixties, Brit-invasion influenced pop tune incorporating ambient sounds, "Under the Lights" --along with the other songs comprising "Lifeboat"-- examines "the personal consequences of living in a dysfunctional society, while skillfully documenting the individual dramas that unfold . . . balancing seamy imagery with catchy, often playful melodies (New Times, Miami)." | MP3.com CD: psychedelics - buy it! Story Behind the Song
Perhaps the oldest tune on Lifeboat, "Under the Lights" was originally composed c.1981, and was often featured in the acoustic segment of Persian Gulf's live shows. The present arrangement and lyrics were conceived and recorded between 1991 and 1995 in St. Augustine and Tallahassee, State of Florida, USA.
Lyrics
Call your lover on the telephone
you're thinking of her but noone's home
and you really don't mind
there's noone else who could find you
take all looking glasses off the wall
you don't want 'em hanging round at all tonight
now the room glows white
as the TV fine tunes you
one fine night
when you're twice this bright
but you haven't got a thing to wear
it's you only and you wake up under the lights
