Story Behind the Song
The completed version of this hymn was first published in 1864. It was included in the William Bradbury collection, The Devotional Hymn and Tune Book, published by the American Baptist Publication Society. This was the only Baptist hymnal to be published in the United States during the Civil War. The text for "The Solid Rock" was originally titled "Gracious Experience of A Christian" and was written by Edward Mote, a cabinet maker turned Baptist lay preacher in the village of Horsham, Sussex, England. The original text written in 1834 contained six verses. The last two verses were not included in the completed hymn.
"My hope was built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; 'Midst all the hell I fell within, on His completed word I lean.
I trust His righteous character, His counsel promise, and His power; His honor and His name's at stake, to save me from the burning lake."
Keith Mack - acoustic guitar
Billy West - acoustic guitar
Larry Lynch - upright bass
