Story Behind the Song
I carried the general idea for the concept around for five years before finally putting the lyrics down on paper in 1979. It wasn't untill 1990 that Ronnie Winstead reinterpreted as a rocker what I had written as a much more mellow and laid back song. I programed the drum machine then laid down the bass guitar for it, both very simple but effective. The song was recorded on my Yamaha 4-track, one instrument per track with a twist. After the lead vocal was finished we noticed that it's track was idle and that's how the second guitar part came to life giving us five parts on a four track tape, which was a big deal to us at that point in time. After all this time, it is still my favorite songs to play VERY loud.
Lyrics
“This Is My Prayer”
-Vs.1-
My prayer to be like thee oh Lord
it echoes in my mind,
As the strings that hold my life intact
seem to all unwind.
And the burdens that I bear
seem to grow heavier each day,
I know Lord that you love me
and you’ll guide me all the way.
-Chorus-
Oh my Lord, hear my prayer.
Oh my God, heed to my call.
To be like thee I long to be,
this is my prayer, this is my prayer oh Lord.
-Vs.2-
The strength that you give to me each day
none other can compare,
And the love that you’ve put within my heart
you told me I should share.
So with these two I face the world
never to be alone,
For with you I do walk the road
that leads to my new home.
