Story Behind the Song
A conversation with one's self!!
Lyrics were written, for the most part, from a poem I wrote in 1991. The music came in two separate parts, inspired by two separate songs:
The 5/8 riff came from recording myself on guitar trying to play "Close to the Edge" by Yes. I screwed the time up royally, however, when playing it back, I realized there was something cool about the weird time signature. I then noticed that these words fit over top. So I changed a few chords, tightened up the rhythm structure, and voila!!
The middle 4/4 part came from the exact opposite. I was practicing the 7/8 riff from UK's "In the Dead of Night" and decided to simplify it, into fitting into straight time. Added a few extra Rush-like riffs and there you have it!!
Lyrics
Why do you question what I know when you know I know?
Why do you think about the times you know we've never had?
It's always on my mind but words are hard to find
They often seem to lie between the written line.
Oh why do you?
I've gone vertigo.
Why do you close the blinds, bolt the door and hide the key?
Why do you cover your tracks in efforts to conceal?
The room is very quiet, my room is very loud
It sometimes seems to want to attract the strangest crowd.
Oh why do you?
I've gone vertigo.
If confusion leads to madness, I'm surely there by now
Drawn by empty promises that should never be allowed
But is it all external or is there something deep inside
That I must come to grips with before my worlds collide?
I've been thinking about women and stuff to blow my mind
But the hi's are never easy and my thoughts leave them behind.
It's not all so bloody cosmic out here on my own.
Why do you shelter ignorance with blind heresy?
Why do you excommunicate beliefs you once held within?
Guarded by pretense; a barbed wire defense
Obscure hallmarks that make little sense.
Oh why do you?
I've gone vertigo.
I really need somebody who will walk me down the street
And with her hand in mine
I will know
She will never let go.
