    This late 19th century setting by Hugo Wolf, a master of the German lied, discloses Joseph's monologue to Mary as they approach Bethlehem. The music depicts the slow,labored rhythm of the journey.
    Credits: Don Sikkema, baritone; Nicholas Palmer, pianist

    Story Behind the Song
    This text was taken from the Spanisches Liederbuch (Spanish Songbook) of Paul Heyse and Emanuel Geibel which contained poetry translated from the Spanish.
    This is an English translation:

    Now go on, Mary, just go forward,
    Already the roosters are crowing
    And we are nearly there.
    Now come along, beloved, my jewel,
    And soon we will be in Bethlehem.
    You will have a good rest and sleep well there.
    Already the roosters are crowing
    And we are nearing the place.
    I see very well, Mistress,
    That your strength is failing,
    And your suffering, I can hardly take.
    Take courage! Surely we will find shelter there.
    Already the roosters are crowing
    And we are almost there.
    If only your hour were past, Mary;
    For good news, I would give a good reward.
    The little donkey here, I would give him!
    Already the roosters are crowing,
    Come, we are nearly there.

    Lyrics
    Nun wandere Maria, nun wandere nur fort.
    Schon kraehen die Haehne und nah ist der Ort.
    Nun wandre, Geliebte, du Kleinod mein,
    und balde wir werden in Bethlehem sein.

    Dann ruhest du fein und schlummerst dort.
    Schon kraehen di Haehne und nah ist der Ort.
    Wohl seh ich, Herrin, die Kraft dir schwinden;
    kann deine Schmerzen, ach, kaum verwinden.

    Getrost! wohl finden wir Herberg dort;
    schon karen die Haehne und nah ist der Ort.
    Waer erst bestanden dein Stuendlein, Marie,
    die gute Botschaft gut lohnt ich sie.

    Das Eselein hie gaeb ich drum fort!
    Schon kraehen die Haehne komm! nah ist der Ort
