Story Behind the Song
Here is an English translation of the French text:
Noel for Mary's love
Let us sing joyously,
Who bore the fruit of life
Only for our salvation.
Joseph and Mary were traveling
One night, very late, to Bethlehem.
The hotel keepers
Didn't regard them very highly.
Joseph looked at Mary
Who was sad and downcast,
And said: "My sweet friend,
Where shall we stay tonight?"
I saw an old stable over there,
Shall we stay there?"
Now the lovely Virgin
Was about to have her baby.
At midnight, that night,
The gentle Virgin had her Baby.
Her cloak was not thick enough
To keep Him warm.
She placed Him in a manger
On just a little hay,
A stone beneath His head;
So slept the All-powerful One.
Lyrics
Noel pour l'amour de Marie,
Nous chanterons joyeusement,
Qui apporta le fruit de vie,
Le tout pour notre sauvement.
Joseph et Marie s'en allerent
Un soir, bien tard, en Bethleem.
Les hoteliers, les hotelieres
Ne les prisaient pas grandement.
Joseph va regardant Marie
Qui a le coeur triste et dolent,
En lui disant: Ma douce amie,
Ou logerons-nous a present?
J'ai vu la une vieille etable,
Logeons-nous-y pour le present;
Alors la Vierge adorable
etait bien pres d'avoir enfant.
A minuit en cette nuitee
La douce Vierge eut son enfant,
Sa robe n'etait point fourree
Pour l'envelopper chaudement.
Elle le mit en une creche
Sur un peu de foin seulement,
Une pierre dessous sa tete,
Pour reposer le Tout-Puissant.
