Story Behind the Song
This is where I like to go: "into a stream of light and stars and gold". Still, silent, and full of sweet possibilities. I'm not sure what else to say about Silver Diamonds,* except that it was a gift to me, and I am happy to share it with you. And remember :
Tender your love
with praise and thanks,
lest the honey fire of autumn fade
and the world become so ordinary once again
*I wrote a poem many years ago which became the first verse to Silver Diamonds, but I never found a second verse in me until last year. In 1990, a phenomenal jazz singer from Portugal named Indio (a.k.a. Fernando Girao) jammed with the Ravel band a few times, and we did some writing together. He composed a lovely song I fell in love with, but I don't remember the Portuguese title of it, and I lost track of him when he moved back to Lisbon. However, after I recorded this tune in January 2000, I suddenly realized I might have unconsciously borrowed part of his chorus melody for this song. To tell you the truth, it was so long ago I don't even remember how much of it is similar, or if the notes are actually the same at all; but I thought it best to acknowledge the possible adaptation that might have occurred.
Lyrics
You rushed me like an april wind
around my feet, you made the river bend
when it rained silver diamonds
i had to follow you
i was the candle to your flame
you said one day, i'd wear silver diamonds
I was searching for so long
till i finally heard the sound of your voice
gentle and pure
it's a dream of wishful dreamers
to be taken by surprise
the deepest emotion flows out of you
into my heart, my lips and my eyes
on the tips of my fingers
I saw the universe unfold
into a stream of light and stars and gold
you were there in the silence
the honey fire of autumn spread
into these chambers while i dreamt
of the crown you wove of silver diamonds
