    Story Behind the Song
I'm the gypsy in my family. No one, including me understands why I move around so much. As Poki sweetly puts it, "You gotta spread your light around". I used to pine for 9-5 normalcy--the mate and the house with a garden and a white picket fence. But music is one of those professions that claims you with a vise so tight, you have no choice but to follow the muse. Many songwriters attribute their best work to the demise of a love affair. And so it is with mild chagrin, that I confess this tune evolved from a lily-livered break-up by mail (the one and only time).
I started writing it in Bilbao, Spain. There isn't much to do there but follow the local pace of life. I usually woke up at noon, just in time to grab a bite to eat before the entire town shut down for siesta. Late afternoon coffee kept me going until things kicked into gear about 10pm, peak hour for dinner. After much boisterous practice of conversational Spanish with perfect strangers, I wandered the charming cobbled avenidas in quiet bliss. Yes, there are better places to work, but none come to mind at the moment.

There's a 3/4 bar in the beginning of each verse, that wrote itself into the song. Kevin is playing a box drum, which has a lighter feel than a full-on drum kit. Adding the guitar was an afterthought that ended up making the song, in my opinion. In another show of superb musicianship, Frank heard and memorized the tune and laid down this bluesy James Taylor-ish part in about twenty minutes.

    Lyrics
I've been hanging on too long
finally ready for that open road
dropped a last goodbye in the mail
there's no blame, no shame, no fail
no reason to feel sorry in your heart
we took all we had to extremes
    what's left of our dream

Gonna take a gig in Spain
    mama keeps saying
    girl, you settle down
don't expect so much from a man
    but i don't like where i am
better to leave the good times where they are
after all, we oughta save the cream
here in what's left of our dream

Why do i make it so tough
    status quo ain't good enough
i know it looks like a blunder
    but i'm being guided homeward

Can't change the way i feel
    somewhere inside this unrelenting storm
i let go every promise we made
now i'm free to find my way
