    Story Behind the Song
This song was written as part of a story I wrote called the moon garden and in response to a favorite children's story of mine about a king's daughter who gets sick and says if she could just have the moon, which lights her bedroom at night, she would get well. In the story the kings bard/jester is the only one wise enough out of king's advisors to listen to the girl and bring exactly what she needs, the moon, or rather what she believes to be the moon. It also is a reflection of a moment I spent in the moonlight when everything was so perfect.

The song was written at my kitchen table in Colorado after I had finished the story the moon garden, which is about a place where magical moons grow and are tended by "the moonlings." It took a few minutes since it had percolating in my brain, as many of my songs do, since I had first read the other story of the moon when I was a child.

The song is about a moment of singing and dancing in the soft solitude of night and the way it feels to be that free and surrounded by so much beauty. The moonlight filters down illuminating the night with "silvery sweetness" while a warm breeze
slips through the soft night air.

The song was recorded in two takes, using both the guitar and voice at the same time.

    Lyrics
CH: Sing down the moon and lay it down gently. Sing down the moon from the heavens above. It lights the night with soft, sil'vry sweetness. Oh why don't you sing down the moon.

VI: I dreamt about walking alone in the moonlight, strolling with stars bright above in the sky. I listened while crickets sang and leaves rustled softly. The breeze touched my skin as it slipped through the night and...CH:

VII: And now I am here am awake in the moonlight. Spiders are weaving their magical webs. Nightbirds are singing and owls are a'winging and as I listen their song fills my head with... CH:

VII: So I dance in the moonlight with night's other creatures and feel as if time is holding its breath. No one's here to watch me alone in the moonlight. At last I am ready to go to the bed but...CH:

Bridge: But when the moonlight is clear and it beckons with magic and mystery I'll ask you again to...

CHII: CH: Sing down the moon and lay it down gently. Sing down the moon from the heavens above. It lights the night with soft, sil'vry sweetness. Oh why don't you sing down the moon. (Repeat). Yes, why don't you sing down the moon. Why don't you sing down, sing down the moon.
