Story Behind the Song
13) Suddenly(8/16/01)
“You Stepped Into My Life” by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibbs, from “This Is the Ultimate Fake Book” p. 655 (lyrically). Musically, it was Dick Barnes who said the major seventh interval was the hardest to sing, yet sounded the best, and my friend and piano teacher at Berklee, who pointed out that the major seventh interval had the most tension. The three syllables--”sud-en-ly” lend themselves particularly well to setting up the interval, and it’s a challenge by itself to sing them. The first syllable, “Sud” is actually on scale 6, with “en-ly” on scale 3, but both ofthem are over scale four as the root of the chord, making the scale 3 a major seventh over the chord root. Very, very unstable; one unstable tone on top of another. Jack Perricone should be proud.
