Story Behind the Song
This song is autobiographical, about the author and her husband when they met and fell in love. They were in high school, trying to grow up in the midst of all the pressure of high school, the demands of family and friends.
Lyrics
SET THEM FREE
Once upon a time there was a young man. His heart ached to be among the stars. He had to save his money for a telescope for gazing at Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. He would fly down a hill on his bicycle with the sun sparkling in his hair.
To be all that he could be, tackle any new territory out there. Please, please, please have a care. Can't you see, let him be, set him free.
Once upon a time there was a young girl. Her heart ached to be among the stars. She spent her Saturdays in New York City where all the great classes in acting are. She would sit on a hilltop with her journal and the breeze would play softly with her hair.
To be all that she could be. Tackle any new territory in there. Please, please, please have a care. Can't you see, let her be, set her free.
Set them free. Set them free to be the best they can be. Together they'll make a new entity, set them free.
Of course the girl and boy fell in love for their fearlessness, their strength shown through. They walked hand in hand through the mountains and in sand. It was where they belonged, this they knew.
But "Why can't you be more like me?" Sometimes it's scary to dare...
To be all that they can be, tackle any new territory that they see. Please, please, please have a care. Can't you see, let them be, set them free. Please, please, please have a care. Can't you see, let them be, set them free.
