Story Behind the Song
Inanna is the Great Goddess of Sumer; She is also known as Ishtar of Babylon, Astarte, and later Ashtaroth by the Hebrews. Her attributes were sometimes shared with Isis, and later were borrowed by Mary. The hymns written to Her, older than the Bible, are simply stunning. The earliest known author of written literature was a priestess of Inanna in Sumer, over four thousand years ago. This priestess, Enheduanna, describes her relationship with her chosen goddess in terms that seem just as true today as they were in the ancient city of Ur.
Inanna's boat is spoken of in the "Descent of Inanna", when her beloved Dumuzi, the shepherd king, comes to court her, and she says, "The Boat of Heaven/Is full of eagerness like the young moon." It goes on, but I don't want to warrant a 'mature' rating, so use your imagination. Or, better, get a copy of the poetry and see for yourself.
Alas, Inanna and Dumuzi's pleasure is not to last. Dumuzi dies, and Inanna goes into the underworld to rescue him, much like Orpheus. She must give up all Her beautiful things, all that makes Her a deity, and She hangs on a meathook for days, all for Dumuzi. Eventually, they are reunited.
