Story Behind the Song
This is was total serendipity. I'd been playing around with the backing parts and just tweedling along. I recorded a take, and Barbara came home as I was listening to it for the first time, and she insisted on my keeping it just like it was. She was right.
"Rasalila" literally means "the spirit of play" and, in Hinduism, it is one of the ways in which the Divine interacts with humanity. Krishna, in many ways, embodies this idea, for He is always playing, no matter what He is doing, and so shows us how to interact with the world in a joyous fashion. Radha is Krishna's beloved; although she is a mortal, He is as obsessed with her as she with He. Their passionate relationship is sometimes taken as metaphor, like the Song of Songs, but if the poetry that they have inspired down the centuries is any indication, the relationship is equally gloriously sensual and spiritually profound.
Javanese gamelan is a very sophisticated musical form from Indonesia. It's played on a variety of drums, gongs, and bells, and is both rhythmically and melodically complex.
